The State of South Carolina will add a new Congressional District following approval of the 2011 reapportionment process. SC House and Senate seats will also be adjusted based on shifts in population in the 2010 US Census. Plans for new districts must be submitted by the State of South Carolina to the United States Department of Justice under Section 5 of the Civil Rights Act. While they may be pre-cleared by the United States Attorney General’s office, districts remain subject to litigation until the March 30, 2012 noon filing deadline. If litigation is pending at the time of the normal filing date, the filing date will be extended until after the litigation is settled.
Officeholders in current districts will serve through 2012. Elections in November 2012. Subject to the approval referenced above, candidates for office during the Primary Election (June 12, 2012) will be running for seats based on the new district plans.
Maps of both the current and proposed districts for United States Congress, SC Senate, and SC House of Representatives can be viewed using the navigation on the right. We will post changes to status with respect to Justice Department and District Court findings on these pages as well.
