Federal Office
At the Federal level, South Carolinians can run for one of two offices at the Federal level: US House of Representatives or US Senate. Members of the US House are elected every two years and US Senators are elected every six years. Statewide Office
At the statewide level, one can run for a variety of positions including Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Secretary of State, State Treasurer, Attorney General, Comptroller General, State Superintendent of Education, Adjutant General, and Commissioner of Agriculture. State Office
At the state level, the two offices at the State level are SC House of Representatives and SC Senate. County/Municipal
South Carolinians can choose from a large array of positions if they want to run for office at the county or municipal level. County are municipal offices are elected every two or four years on the first Tuesday of November. Municipal elections are also held throughout the year, so it is best to check with your local county office to determine when the elections for a particular position are to be held. School Board
School board election times and types vary by school districts - some boards have all elected, some have all appointed members, and some have a combination.
The filing dates for school board seats vary from county to county. In some districts, candidates must also file by petition. For more information, contact your county election commission.
