The Honorable Walt McLeod
Walt McLeod is currently the S.C. House Representative of District 40 and a member on the Judiciary Committee. He is also an attorney and has spent many years working for the law. As a member of multiple boards and councils in the state, Representative McLeod supports his community through his participation on the Editorial Advisor Board of the Southeastern Environmental Law Journal, the John Belton O’Neall American Inn of Court, the Newberry County Council on Aging, the Newberry College Foundation, the S.C. Alzheimer’s Association, and most recently, the S.C. Humanities Council.
He received his Bachelor’s Degree from Yale University and, before receiving his L.L.B. from the University of South Carolina, Mr. McLeod served in the U.S. Navy from 1959-1961. Later he would also serve as a captain in the U.S. Navy Reserves in 1963 and 1990. As a law clerk for two years he worked under the U.S. 4th Circuit Court of Appeals and then joined Pope & Schumpert Law Firm in 1965. Continuing his practice in law, Mr. McLeod became an Assistant U.S. Attorney for a year and then the Deputy S.C. Attorney General. In 1983, he set his sights on the political arena and became Mayor of Little Mountain, South Carolina from 1983-1989. In 1997, he began to serve in the S.C. House of Representatives.
Mr. McLeod has one child with his wife Julie E. Hamiter. They live in Little Mountain, S.C.
